The 4th of July

Can you guess who was most excited about everyone having the day off work on the 4th of July?

Me! It was me.

Good guess, you guys.

I expressed to Blake and the big kids that we just ALL needed to be together, eat lots of good food and celebrate LIFE along with our independence.

So thankful to be able to say that is exactly what we did!

Briar and her people headed over to Twin Oaks around lunch time and we spent the whole afternoon just enjoying each other, the weather, that pool, and lots of good food.

Lane, Tate, Eliza and Blake even went for a swim in the morning!

Once Kay’s arrived the real party started!

The weather was PERFECT to be in the pool and the water was warm!

All of the kiddos enjoyed it very much!

Briar. What can I say about this girl?

She is the BEST baby.

So happy all the time!

And super cute!

And loves water!

Kayla brought some fun things for the kiddos – and we had fun sticking them on everyone!

We had dinner and someone had a nap too.

Her Mama, whose lap she was sitting on, managed to stay awake!

Then we headed out for the fireworks!

It rained four times – in large downpours – before the fireworks started.

I only have this one photo!

What a cute photo though, huh?!

The 4th of July was truly the best day and it filled us up for what lay ahead.

The next morning we headed back to Madison for Chad’s surgery.

I think I have told my amazing hubby 3,982 times how much I love that pool – but let me say it again!

I LOVE THAT POOL!

SO thankful for it – especially now that summer is going to be a lot of home time.

I am also thankful to be an American!!

Hope you all had a wonderful 4th of July too!!

Surgery Day For Chad

Chad had an “exploration and repair” surgery on his injured hand last Friday.

Surgery was originally scheduled for 1:30, was changed to 2:30, and then it actually ended up being at 3:30.

Chad’s surgery was at the UW Children’s Hospital, which we were very grateful for because those are our stomping grounds for all things medical for Tate and Eliza.

We were all calm and relaxed before surgery – especially Chad!

The anesthesiologist actually gave Chad two options of how he could be put to sleep and our smart boy chose exactly what we would have chosen if we had been speaking for him!

While we were waiting on the surgeon to show up, I took this photo.

We were in the Children’s Hospital, after all, but it cracked me up how far Chad’s feet hung off the end of the bed!

Pretty soon the surgeon was there and he wrote all over Chad’s left arm with a marker – just to make sure they didn’t operate on his leg – he said.

Ok then!

We said our “so-longs” (where I kissed Chad’s head multiple times) and Blake and I headed out to a waiting room to eat some lunch snacks and drink our coffee that we had smuggled into the hospital inside our cooler.

They gave us a pager.

I remember this whole pager thing from Eliza’s surgery – literally a life-line to that O.R.!

They updated us only twice because Chad’s surgery was done in less than two hours.

After that second page the surgeon came to speak to us.

We learned that Chad’s injuries were worse than expected so the surgery plan had changed a bit.

We did not ask specifics, but we were told that Chad’s prognosis “looks promising.”

WE WILL TAKE THAT, YES!

I headed back to Chad’s pre-op room and Blake headed to the pharmacy to get the pain meds we would need for Chad.

I noticed how beautiful it was outside while I waited!!

Pretty soon we were called back to the recovery area and were immediately told that Chad had tried to stand up and walk out of the place!

That’s my boy!

The nurse was SO tiny compared to Chad and also said “This boy is a giant – I was actually a little worried that I wouldn’t get him to lay back down!”

Chad’s hand has a new cast on it, and his fingers are all hyper extended inside of there.

Once Chad was fully awake (and not trying to escape!), they made sure he could sit and stand up and then we got ready to go!

We are SO, SO, SO thankful that amazing anesthesiologist put a block in Chad’s arm and Chad literally could not feel a thing from the elbow down.

It gave us a pain free ride home and a pain free night of sleep that night!

We got home a little after 10 p.m. to a spotless house with three bathed kiddos tucked in their beds already – all done by Addie Mae – of course, of course.

I love that girl!!

That block wore off Saturday morning sometime and Chad started those big meds Saturday evening, even though he did not want to.

Sunday was LONG.

Really long.

But every day since has gotten better and better!!!

Today, if I may shout some praise, Chad is only using Tylenol and not even needing it when it is due.

YAHOO!

Yes, you can shout with me!!

We see the surgeon for our next follow-up on Monday.

We all are looking forward to getting through this part of Chad’s healing to get to the part where he will do therapy to teach those fingers to work again!

Things really could not be going better here.

Chad is doing SO amazing with all of this!

Thank you all for praying us through all of this!!

For checking on us!

For sending encouraging messages!

We appreciate it all!

We know for a fact that we are seeing answers to specific prayers and we are SO thankful!

TO GOD BE THE GLORY!!

Chad’s Surgery

We were back in Madison all day Monday.

Chad had an appointment with the surgeon at 1:00, but we also had some lunch out and went to Costco to stock up our pantry and freezers!

Chad’s appointment went VERY well!

Chad had his dressing changed and the doctor (and us!) took a peek at those fingers.

Chad’s hand looks amazing and is healing so nicely!

Unfortunately, the surgeon will be opening all those wounds back up when Chad has surgery on Friday.

Right now surgery is scheduled for 1:30, but we were told the time could change.

The surgeon will explore and repair each one of Chad’s four fingers that are injured.

If all goes as planned, we will be able to come home on Friday.

Chad has a long road of recovery ahead and will need therapy to get mobility back to those fingers.

Going to be honest here – the injury is NOT the hard part for Chad – it is not being able to work at a brand new job he LOVED and not being able to do all the other things too.

That and the fact that Chad feels like he let his boss and co-workers down.

We continue to appreciate your prayers!

For pain management.

For REST. Chad is having a very, very difficult time settling in and getting any sleep.

For surgery Friday. For the surgeon, and for every single detail, including travel mercies.

For Chad’s heart as he processes what a change this is for him for this summer and fall.

For our littles as they deal with all the change too.

Don’t forget to PRAISE GOD FOR CHAD’S FINGERS!!!!

And to ask the Lord to allow the glory to be ALL HIS!!!

Thank you and bless you all!

Chad’s Accident

Yesterday around 11:30 Chad cut his left hand on a table saw while he was at work.

Thankfully, he has very capable co-workers who jumped into action to help Chad right as the accident happened.

Chad (yes, himself) called me on my cell phone around 11:50, and said, “Mom, I need you to come, I cut my hand on a saw and my boss wants me to go get checked.”

He was extremely calm – that and his choice of words gave me my own opinion about the accident – that it must not be that bad!

I still left quickly and I arrived at Chad’s work by noon, as he works very close to our home.

Thankfully Addie Mae was home and she stayed with the others kiddos.

When I arrived on the lot I was met by Chad’s boss’s son and was told to follow him – which I did.

Chad’s boss and co-workers helped load Chad into the front seat of the van.

They had a bandage over Chad’s hand and a tourniquet on his wrist.

We got to our local hospital in about ten minutes and a nurse met us and took Chad inside.

Right away the nurse and the doctor started working on taking the bandage and tourniquet off Chad’s hand and wrist.

I stood there looking on and saw the injuries for the first time.

I think I knew right away that things had just drastically changed for us – for that day, for this week, and for our summer.

Chad was extremely calm even though he was in a lot of pain.

I found it easy to remain calm too, and appreciate a doctor who looks at an injury like that and immediately says “It could be so much worse! Thank goodness you still have your fingers. One fourth of an inch further and they would be gone.”

Yes, PRAISE GOD.

Praise God, Praise God!

They gave Chad a shot of pain meds and then we sat for 30 minutes while they soaked his hand to clean it.

I took this photo during that time – one, because it was my view – and two, because as I looked at his feet and watched Chad handle this huge trial I realized that my boy is becoming an amazing young man.

After soaking Chad’s hand, the nurse cleaned it some more, and then the doctor came in and numbed one of the four fingers that was injured so that he could explore the wound to make decisions about Chad’s care.

That was NOT fun.

It took just a minute of the doctor exploring that wound before everything quickly changed.

An IV was started for antibiotics, Chad got a tetanus shot, phone calls were being made to have Chad transferred, and the reality of the severity of Chad’s injury struck us both.

That’s when we both cried for the first time.

It was a much needed release, and definitely ok to be sad that this had happened!

They got Chad bandaged back up to make the trip to UW Madison where Chad would see a hand specialist and have surgery to repair his hand.

Chad was smiling once they put that splint on because it cut his pain level in half.

So thankful!

At this point Blake left work and headed our way.

Around 4:00 we were discharged from our local E.R., met Addie and the other kiddos in the parking lot for quick hugs and to grab food and supplies, and got on the road to make the two hour trip to Madison.

We arrived around 6:00 and headed in through the emergency entrance like we had been instructed to do.

Everyone we met knew we were coming, and they paged the surgery team within minutes of us being there.

More decisions needed to be made, so they unwrapped Chad’s hand.

We cried some more, not gonna lie.

The surgeon decided to do a first “surgery” right there in the E.R. by giving Chad a BIG pain med through his IV and by doing a numbing block to each one of his fingers.

We got to travel with his IV port still in his arm and I am so thankful it was still there and useable!

The numbing process was a lot.

So many shots. Oh my heart.

The nurse brought in an IPad to try to distract Chad from all that was going on.

While we waited for the numbing block to take its full effect he and Blake watched fishing videos.

They laid Chad flat for the surgery so he would not be able to see.

The surgeon did a lot of cleaning of Chad’s wounds.

There is a huge concern for infection because of how deep the wounds are and because they were made by a table saw in a wood shop.

After getting it all clean you could really see the damage very clearly.

The surgeon started telling us what he was seeing in each wound on each finger, and as the list grew I knew this was far from over.

Chad has tendons that are exposed and injured, his pinky is fractured, and all of his joints are exposed as well.

We were told that he will have to have surgery in an O.R. this coming week to do a proper repair.

For now the surgeon closed the wounds, dressed them, and put Chad in a cast.

We were SO glad to have that part over with!!

It was 9:00 p.m. by this time, so we sent Blake after some food.

Chad was finally allowed to eat!

Chipotle was the unanimous decision for some yummy food and it was pretty close by.

I wish I could tell you it was delicious, but I don’t remember chewing or tasting it because I ate it SO fast!

Chad was needing another big dose of antibiotics before we could go home.

While we were waiting on that (and our discharge instructions), a nurse came in and moved us to a waiting room because the E.R. was SO busy that they needed our room.

Finally at 11:00 p.m. we walked Chad out to the van and headed home!

We got home at 1:15 a.m. and went straight to bed.

Chad had a restful night last night and his pain was managed well.

It was so good to be all together again this morning!

We are keeping Chad still and quiet until we return to Madison this week.

We do not know exactly when yet, but will know on Monday morning.

I have a bazillion questions for his surgeon!

I cannot publish this post without trying to find the words to express our humble appreciation for the OUTPOURING of support, prayers and love we have had yesterday and today.

When we knew Chad was being transferred to UW Madison, I put a post on Instagram asking for prayer.

IT TOOK OUR BREATH AWAY TO SEE SO MANY STAND IN PRAYER ON OUR BEHALF IN OUR TIME OF NEED.

You all, THAT is what the body of Christ looks like – caring enough about someone else’s trial to take the time to storm heaven’s gates on their behalf!

Prayer is SO important!

I do not even know how to properly say thank you.

But thank you. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

We needed you all so much.

We felt each prayer. Really we did.

We felt hugged and held with each comment, message and text.

Again, thank you.

Please keep praying!

For Chad’s heart as he struggles with the feelings that he let his boss and the co-worker that he was working with down.

For the reality that is setting in about how much this summer just changed for Chad and for us.

For the surgeon (whom we LOVE) who will try to repair Chad’s hand to full function.

For pain management.

We know the truths from God’s Word and we are focused on them.

We have a sovereign God and WE LOVE HIM!!

He KNOWS IT ALL.

Pray God will use this trial FOR HIS GLORY ALONE.

That our every response will glorify HIM!

“For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith the Lord. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts.” Isaiah 55:8-9
