It’s Not All About The Weather

Talking about the weather makes me think fondly of my Dad.

He and I always talked about the weather – on the phone, or through e-mails.

I remember those conversations were most frequent when we lived on the farm.

My Dad loved hearing about all of our farm shenanigans!

The weather seems to be the topic most discussed in our neck of the woods in the past couple of weeks.

Because, REALLY.

It had been unseasonably cold. Very blustery. Cloudy.  SO RAINY. SO WET.

Let me just say, though, that it makes the warm, sunny days so very sweet!

We have a lot of goals for Twin Oaks that are in need of some warm sunny days.

Thankful that summer seems to be here now!!

My  last post was written on the day that we were getting our laying hens!

I named our new girls the day after they arrived, of course, of course.

Penelope, Henrietta, Matilda, and Genevieve.

I know! Adorable names, right?!

We are a little suspicious these last couple of days that Henrietta might actually be a Henry instead – based on her crowing she is doing every morning. Hmmm…… time will tell!

20190520_193112.jpg20190522_190950.jpgThey have been SUPER fun!

This week I asked the boys to extend their run for me.

They drew a sketch, showed it to Blake, he brought home some stuff, and now the hen house looks like this!

Thanks, boys!

The guys were off work, and so we started to work on projects right away that Saturday morning!

The boys built and hung the swing that I was given before we left the farm.

I LOVE where they put it – on the patio downstairs looking right at the morning sunrises.

20190525_114910.jpgWhile they were doing that, Kayla and I were going over the hills and through the woods to Deep Rooted – an organic green house!

We both got plants for our gardens there!

Isn’t it beautiful?

20190525_11025520190525_110248.jpgThe guys also built a garden box for me that weekend so I had a place to put all those beautiful plants I bought!

It is a tiny garden compared to how we used to garden at the farm, but very manageable and still giving us some home grown goodness!

20190525_11493820190525_11500420190525_145731We planted the garden very early on Memorial Day before the rain started.

It was cold!

Two seconds after I took this photo Eliza ran back into the house saying it was way too windy and cold. Smart move, sweet baby!!

20190527_080530

Everyone else got busy planting!

20190527_080655.jpg20190527_08110920190527_081750.jpgTate helped out by playing with the dogs and cleaning up the empty trays!!

20190527_083002Here is how I was dressed. I told you it was freezing!

20190527_083552-2287620554-1559741138738.jpgThankfully we were able to work outside a lot on that Saturday when it was warm and dry.

The guys got a start on the base of the new pool.

This pool will not be taken down each year, so the set up requires a little bit more work!

20190525_115059

20190525_145726The littles played and played and played that Saturday.

It was SUCH a great day!

I had to stop often and enjoy the new swing!

20190525_150534

After dinner, someone climbed in my lap and took a little snooze!

20190525_185515Sundays are usually full of our favorite people!

David and Kay and their crew join us for snack dinner!

It was SO beautiful that day!

20190526_185302.jpgWe had a great Memorial Day weekend, even though it poured rain the whole day that Monday.

I’m so thankful that we decided to use the yard as it is this year!

It will take A LOT of fill (and money) to make it a real yard – and we are enjoying it just as it is!!

Speaking of enjoying things – look what God did!

20190526_203310.jpgIt never gets old.

Looking forward to summer and many more days on the land of our little nest!!

Happy summer, everyone!!!!

Hey Y’all

I decided to sit for a bit.

I sit on an exercise ball whenever at my desk, and many other times during the day as well.

SO, so good for my low back, and my core, and my hips – at least that is what my trainer tells me!

I tend to always think she is right – because I usually see results from all the things she has me do at home!

Since I am sitting for a bit, I downloaded and edited a bunch of photos to get in my little scrapbook here!

Chad and I headed to town two weeks ago for a big orthodontic appointment for him.

Not a fun appointment this time, but we still were able to do some other errands while we were out.

I usually take something to work on while waiting, but I totally FORGOT!

It was coffee, a magazine, HGTV and me – at least they have a lovely waiting room!

We also had some dentist appointments this last week.

I do not like the dentist.

Well, that’s not what I really meant – I like our dentist – I just don’t like going to him!

Chad and I both had work done and we both were pleasantly surprised how easy it was!

I went first, and then I took a pile of kiddos to the van.

We opened the windows and I read three chapters of a chapter book to them while Chad had his turn!

Then they did their illustrations and narrations too!

The weather is sure something to talk about!

It has been summer-like and then winter-like.

And then winter-like.

And then winter-like.

UGH.

We have had a couple of storms roll through too.

One storm came through on a Sunday afternoon which kept everyone at the window watching!

I watched a storm roll in very early one morning, and by the time it was time to wake the kiddos, it had knocked our power out!

We did not get it back for almost two hours!

Can you see the boys in that photo there?

On the cold days, we do cold day things!

Books, books, books!!

Library shopping, and then read aloud with illustrations and narrations!

We also spend a bit of time on chores and in school – which is much easier on the cold days!

I started cursive with Tate and Eliza.

Eliza hugged me and said thank you three times!!

I love her SO much!

I also love how much she loves her Daddy.

He had to work hard to win this girl’s heart!!

On the warm days, I dare ya to catch us inside AT ALL!

We just can’t get enough!

Books go outside in the sunshine too!

The bike trail was a blast one warm afternoon!

And please take a moment to notice Tate in that second picture.

Unbelievably strong!!!

SOB.

Praise Jesus with us about that boy, will you?!

On warm days all of our people return home from work with all kinds of good things!!

Blake stopped one day during work to grab something, and we got to see one of the trucks he designed for a road crew!

It was very neat.

Chad has become our official grill master now.

He does a great job!!!

That is a pile of turkey veggie burgers!

Cook once eat twice is my RULE.

We were getting tired one evening, but did not want to go inside so we had a last minute camp fire.

Our first of the season!

I had to pull over on the way to town one day to take this photo!

SO gorgeous!

The big three kiddos got grocery for us one night last week, which left Blake and I with these guys.

We played outside until it was dark, scrubbed them all up, and then climbed in bed to watch a movie!

This cutie turned one recently!!

Her new sleeping spot is under the table.

SO cute.

I have a page in my journal with a list of all my goals for summer.

They don’t feel like a job that has to be done, but I am terrible at thinking on my feet – so the list is a way for me to remember how I would like to use my time wisely!

One of my goals is to read.

I have lost my desire and focus to read, and I have been praying for God to bring it back!

He is answering!

Here is my stack so far of the books I have collected.

Right now I am reading this one – Shepherding A Child’s Heart – and OH MY GOODNESS – get yourselves this book!

Poor Blake – I read it to him too! It’s that good!!

I have read this book many times before, but it is still so fresh to me!

I have been walking up and down our road quite a bit lately (another goal!).

Sunset walks are the BEST.

Makes me think of all the times we would take a sunset walk back at Adoni Acres.

It’s just such a beautiful time of the day!

I was following Blake home from date night last Friday night and while on the highway I heard a big CLUNK.

Oh boy.

I wasn’t around anything or anyone, so I wondered what it could have been.

When we got home we checked and this piece of my van was missing!

Fifty-five dollars, folks.

For a piece of plastic that glues on right there.

This world is crazy, I tell ya.

Date night this week was all about goals!

Goals for these kiddos and this place we call Twin Oaks!

My hubby bought us this, and I might have squealed and made a scene in the middle of Farm and Fleet!

Blake was dying laughing!!

They had these cuties at Farm and Fleet too – and I wanted them ALL.

But those are ducks.

Ducks are MESSY.

So we bought these girls instead!!

These kiddos built the coop this afternoon and those hens will be here very soon!

I might cry when I fetch our first egg out of that cute coop!!

Today started out at 32 degrees, but it has gotten a little bit nice out there now.

At least the sun is trying to shine!

I hope we can keep our new hens warm enough!

Stay tuned for a photo of our first eggs!

I CAN’T WAIT!!

Mother’s Day Weekend

What a nice weekend we had!

Addie and I are on a committee of about ten women who run a women’s ministry at our church.

This past Saturday morning we hosted a Mother and Daughter Tea Party that was held in our church basement.

It was SO much fun to plan, organize, and prepare for!

We had almost 80 gals attend the tea party.

Eliza was my only date for the tea party, as Kayla was out of town and Addie Mae had to work.

We had the best time!

Eliza was SO excited to be my helper as we prepared the food, set up and set out the food.

I will let the photos show how beautiful it all turned out!

We could not have done it with one less set of hands – many hands make light work!

After we arrived home from the tea, Blake took the kiddos fishing!

They had a great time!

Sunday morning before church the kiddos blessed me with a gift for Mother’s Day – homemade cards, a new mug, and some chocolate!

My favorite mug had chipped and was getting more chipped each time it was washed, so I really appreciate a new mug to call my favorite!

After church and lunch we decided to get a photo of the kiddos and I.

It wasn’t as easy as it would seem to be!

That’s better!!!

Me and my crew!!

Minus one very precious member of this crew – Kayla Lauren!

Addie Mae made our traditional Mother’s Day cheesecake for me too!

IT WAS SO GOOD.

Remember that new wood island counter I told you all about?

It was delivered Sunday afternoon (now that’s service!!), and it turned out so beautiful!

(We are still in the process of painting the island white.)

We spent Mother’s Day afternoon just BEING here all together, and then in the evening our favorites (Briar’s people!!) joined us for Sunday night snack night!

I was right that we had a nice weekend, wasn’t I?

The weather is getting better and better each day this week, and has us northerners hopeful that we might actually have summer this year!!!

YAHOO!!

Hoping all you Mom’s out there had a nice Mother’s Day too!

Hey May

MAY.

Guess I don’t need to say all the cliche things – so let’s just jump right in!

We started May off with some pretty significant health trials – for Kayla’s crew and our crew here too.

OH. MY. HEART.

SO much to be thankful for as we go through this – and we are still going through this.

As I type this, Chad is recovering on the couch downstairs.

He spent yesterday morning in the E.R. because of how sick he was with this vomiting flu.

Here are a few photos of what illness looks like in our little nest!

Do you all have a bright green puke bowl too?

Good grief, these are hard on my Mama’s heart.

There are lots of ways not to lose your mind when your home is filled with illness.

Pay attention!

Baking is one of them.

I made this cookie skillet for the healthy ones one day last week and they ate it for their afternoon snack!

Just a disclaimer here – I do not eat things like this because of my no grains/no sugar life.

I did make this for myself though!

It has three ingredients – bananas, peanut butter, and cocoa!

Even bananas seem to sugary for me most days, but I was trying to remain sane here, remember?

You can also rearrange the furniture to keep sane.

If you have a strong enough kiddo who is not one of the sick ones, that is!

So far we have left it that way!

Time will tell!

Ruby loves this new arrangement, of course!

My hubby brought this home for me one evening during the first round of illness.

Isn’t that sweet!?

I only drank a bit of it and saved the rest for the next day!

The Saturday before last, which happened to be APRIL 27TH, looked like this out of our windows.

I don’t know what it felt like, because I personally never went out there or even opened the door!

I took that beautiful snow storm as a GREAT opportunity to spring clean all day long!

I had some helpers!

But I needed their muscles for many things on my list!

Blake and I tackled the mess in the storage room and filled the van with a load for Good Will.

Don’t you love those horse heads hanging off the shelf there?

And Sadie looking up at me wondering if I am going to make her move?

We scrubbed the basement from top to bottom that day, and then I asked everyone to move out.

Just kidding!!

It looked great, but the only photo I took was this one!

That Sunday morning we stayed home from church to keep our germs with us here.

Worship at home is lovely.

In between the two rounds of illness, we had some normal days!

Normal days mean school, chores, and making food to feed everyone!

We have even had a few teases of spring!

Sunny and beautiful, but not very often!

We take FULL advantage of it when it’s nice.

Bible time and school on the deck, of course!

School has slowed to our more gentle “summer” schedule, which for the three youngest means Bible time, Math, and lots and lots of reading with narrations and illustrations.

And then lots of free time to explore their own creative desires!

Tate and Eliza finished their first grade workbooks, so I ordered their second grade ones.

These two LOVE workbooks!

I still make a ton of food around these parts!

I love to do it, and they love to eat it!!

My Saturday kitchen helpers are younger than they have been in recent years past, but they love to help and I love the help!

I have a goal of finding new recipes this summer.

I worked on that last week while the littles were sick.

Obviously I am focusing on the most important food choices!

Busted!

I made that caramel sauce you can see on the computer screen in this photo, and it is GOOD.

This past weekend was GORGEOUS!!

Can you hear the sing songy voice I am saying that word in?

We were outside endlessly!

We even had our first meal on the deck!

I took this photo on Sunday morning because it showed how much fun we had had on Saturday night!

Our nest had been FULL of good friends!

Addie Mae is working full-time now, so guess who is the grocery crew?

At least my hubby helps me, and buys the coffee first!

SO….which one of us do you think RUNS through the store and sticks to the LIST?

And which one of us stops to look at EVERYTHING, and takes WAY too long?

You guys are such good guessers!

I am glad he does that though, because he found these!

They. Are. So. Perfect!

Yummy, bendable, not dry, do not expire for a year, don’t need a fridge EVER, don’t need steamed to roll them…did I say yummy??

My hubby went back and bought ten more packs!

He knew I would tell everyone I know about them and then they would be gone!

So if you can’t find them, I have some for you!

Addie sent me some photos off her phone recently.

This is what happens to your hair when your Mama is in Florida and your big sister is in charge!

Addie sent me this photo on text while we were in Florida and they had no power because of the ice storm.

Ruby was warming Eliza’s toes because the house was getting cold!

Here’s one from Easter.

It still takes my breath away to see our littles growing up best friends with Kay’s littles.

That is just seriously good stuff!

Addie was also looking back at old photos and sent me these!

I think we had stolen her phone that day and were leaving her a surprise??

Crack me up.

I found out about my Mother’s Day gift already.

They always ask me what I want for Mother’s Day and I always say the same thing every year.

Everyone together, the pool set up, and CHEESECAKE – emphasis on cheesecake!

This year Blake was offered some beautiful free ash wood and decided to have a new island counter made out of it!

A friend from church is making it!!

Usually I find out about surprises before they happen because I am a terrible person that way, ha!

Drives my husband crazy.

This time I really had no clue!

They were sneaky!

But they decided to tell me because they wanted my opinion on it.

I am SO excited to see it finished and on the island!!

The wood is beautiful!!

Well, as I type this the house is shaking from the howling wind, the windows are bouncing the pouring rain off of them, and I hear the furnace running.

Sigh.

Hey May!

You do not feel like May!

I still sat on the couch this morning with my Bible and a cup of coffee and whispered a HUGE thank you to Jesus.

He gave me this day.

He gave US this day!

He put breath into my lungs.

He put breath in to OUR lungs!

Praise be to God!

If you haven’t stopped and asked yourself if you TRULY believe that God is always good and always chooses what is BEST for you – I challenge you to do so.

I did that this past week.

And I believe it.

He is always good.

He always chooses best for me.

I believe it with the depth of my being.

Do YOU?

HAPPY MAY, FRIENDS!!
